Bringing young and old together

Friends of the Elderly Ireland have provided both young and old the opportunity to participate in Inter-generational programmes in different formats and settings for over 35 years.

For many different reasons the opportunities for the young and the old to have meaningful contact has decreased significantly. Inter-generational programmes encourage interactions and the development of friendships among different age groups.

Friends of the Elderly Ireland promotes inter-generational programmes by providing a growing number of activities or social engagement programmes for the young, from primary school through university students to enjoy the company of their older friends.

These friendships help to increase young people’s awareness of ageing and develop a sense of caring and respect for older members. Often they share stories and brighten up each others’ day.
