As a values based organisation, Friends of the Elderly is fully committed to maintaining the highest standards of governance, accountability and transparency. To ensure this is the case, the Board has adopted policies and codes of best practice which go beyond the minimum legal requirements in order to ensure the highest level of transparency and accountability.

Friends of the Elderly is a registered charity with the Charities Regulator. Our Registered Charity Number (RCN) is 20034276 . Friends of the Elderly complies with the requirements and guidelines set out by the Charities Regulator.

Our Governance Framework
Friends of the Elderly is governed by an independent, voluntary Board of Directors which is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity. Operational responsibility is delegated to our General Manager.
– Our Board of Directors has adopted, is signed up to, and complies with the governance recommendations set out in the Charities Regulator’s Governance Code – the Code of Practice for Good Governance of Community, Voluntary and Charitable Organisations in Ireland.
– Our financial statements and annual reports are prepared in accordance with Charity SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice) standards. Our financial accounts are independently audited each year and audited accounts are filed with the Companies Registration Office and submitted to the Charities Regulator. – We are dedicated to achieving the highest standards and best practice in fundraising. We are fully committed to achieving the standards contained within the Guidelines for Charitable Organisations on Fundraising from the Public and to ensuring that we undertake our activities in line with our values and that we are transparent and accountable in our actions.
Friends of the Elderly actively respects the rights of all those who come into contact with our staff or volunteers to be treated with dignity, respect and equality. Our Complaints Policy ensures that people who feel they are not treated in this manner can address this with us. As well as being addressed in a fair and comprehensive manner, any complaint is also viewed as an opportunity to inform and to continuously improve the quality of our services.

Friends of the Elderly Ireland (FOTE) is a charity operating in Ireland and is a member of the International Federation of the Little Brothers of the Poor. FOTE is a non-profit, volunteer-based organisation committed to relieving social isolation and loneliness among the elderly through friendship and companionship. Elderly members of the public can register as service users of FOTE and are referred to as members.
The charitable purpose of FOTE is to aid and serve elderly members of the public who are socially isolated and/or alone, improve the quality of life for elderly people, and enable them to continue living at home by organising befriending services that aim to promote positive ageing, independence, and the general well-being of members.
FOTE achieves its charitable purpose by providing the following services:
- Home visitations from befriending volunteers.
- A friendly phone call service.
- Regular social events for members.
- Special events such as Christmas parties, National Day celebrations and other similar activities.
- A birthday programme to acknowledge the birthdays of members.
- Outdoor events such as day trips to places of interest such as museums, cinemas and similar places.
- Short holidays in various parts of Ireland.
- The promotion of intergenerational activities.
- Introductory training and classes in various disciplines to promote personal development among members.
- Advocacy and referral services.
- Where possible, practical support, such as providing food and care packages.
