Friends of the Elderly Ireland is delighted and deeply honoured to announce that President of Ireland, Catherine Connolly, has become Patron of Friends of the Elderly Ireland.
The patronage marks a very special moment in our history and comes as Friends of the Elderly continues its work to ensure that older people experiencing loneliness and isolation remain connected, included and valued.
President Catherine Connolly, said:
“It is a privilege to be asked to serve as Patron of Friends of the Elderly Ireland. For nearly 50 years, Friends of the Elderly have, through their nationwide network of volunteers, demonstrated the importance of positive ageing, the difference that friendship can make in all of our lives, and the vital contribution which older people continue to make to society throughout every year of their lives.”
Since our establishment in Dublin in 1980, friendship has been at the heart of everything we do. Through our volunteers and programmes, including Home Visitation, Friendly Calls, Social Clubs, activities and day trips, we create opportunities for older people to build meaningful friendships, remain active and feel part of their communities.
At the heart of our work is a simple belief: everyone needs friendship, connection and a sense of belonging, whatever their age.
Welcoming President Connolly as Patron, Bernie Curran, General Manager of Friends of the Elderly Ireland, said:
“We are immensely proud and honoured to welcome President Catherine Connolly as Patron of Friends of the Elderly Ireland. For our members, this is a very special recognition. It sends a powerful message that older people matter, that their voices and experiences matter, and that all people should remain visible, connected and valued at every stage of life.
For 46 years, friendship has been at the heart of Friends of the Elderly. We see every day the difference that simply having someone to talk to, somewhere to go and people who genuinely care can make in an older person’s life. President Connolly’s patronage is a wonderful recognition of that work and, above all, of the older people at the heart of our organisation.
We are delighted to welcome the President into the Friends of the Elderly family and look forward to this very special new chapter in our story.”
Friends of the Elderly currently supports more than 1,300 older members, with hundreds of volunteers helping to provide friendship and social connection through our programmes. Our vision is of a society where everyone can age positively and have the opportunity to live their lives as fully as possible.
President Connolly’s patronage begins an important new chapter for Friends of the Elderly as we continue to respond to Ireland’s ageing population and ensure that friendship and human connection remain at the centre of positive ageing.
We are immensely proud to welcome President Catherine Connolly as Patron of Friends of the Elderly Ireland and look forward to sharing this next chapter with our members, volunteers, supporters and friends.
