‘Bringing Young and Old Together’
Friends of the Elderly invite Primary School teachers to foster communication between young students and older members of the community by introducing children to the Young Friends of the Elderly Primary School Programme.
How Students Can Help:
- The Friendship Card – Our Friendship Card project allows students to bring joy to some of our most isolated members. Each week, we send out cards to our older friends to celebrate birthdays, special occasions, or just to send well wishes. Every card is designed and created by students, and for many recipients, it may be the only card they receive.
- The Older Person Biography – Children are encouraged to speak to an older friend, such as a grandparent or neighbour, and compile a brief biography. After completing this project, they reflect on whether their views of older people have changed and what they have learned from their interaction.
- The ‘In My Day’ School Visit – Teachers can invite an older community member to speak to the students about what life was like when they were young, sharing their stories and experiences with the children.
Certificates of Merit, signed by our Ambassador Dr. Ronnie Delany, will be awarded by Friends of the Elderly upon completion of the programme.
