Our greatest need is always for volunteers who can visit our older friends in their homes or nursing homes. It’s one of our most flexible volunteering opportunities and the benefits to both you the volunteer and the older person are remarkable. We ask our befrienders to visit an older person for 1-2 hours a week, to have a chat, cup of tea or maybe go for a short walk.
Our friendly call service is a lifeline to so many older people who may have nobody to talk to. As a friendly caller we ask that you call an older person in their home, to help them stay connected with the outside world. We ask for 1-2 hours of your time per week at times that are suitable to you. You can either make calls directly from your home or from our office at 25 Bolton Street, Dublin 1.
As part of our extensive programme of activities we host social events here in Bolton Street, Dublin 1. These events are held during the day typically Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays. It is an opportunity for our members to meet and enjoy music, dancing and friendship.
Can’t commit to weekly or monthly volunteering? Be an occasional volunteer and support us when we host special events like cabarets, and Christmas lunches or take our members on day trips throughout Ireland. Please note these events usually take place on weekdays during the day.
Friends of the Elderly run a charity shop Ritzy Rags at 25 Bolton Street Dublin 1, which provides much needed financial support for us. The shop is staffed with volunteers working 4-hour shifts in pairs of two, during the opening hours of 9 am – 5 pm, Monday-Saturday.
We provide food and hygiene hampers to our members to help with practical support. We always need drivers to help deliver these hampers.
